Chobits 1-6

Chobits, sweet and tender or dark and perverted? I went into the series with that question in mind but got a bit lost along the way.

Anyways, I thought I’d throw down some of my thoughts and ideas into 4 or 5 parts throughout the series before attempting an answer, since doing it all in one go isn’t tractable. (It also gives me time to ruminate on it as a whole but still be able to write about it while things are still fresh.)

The animation really surprised me from the get-go, with beautiful backgrounds, character expression approaching Kannagi’s level, and cuteness(!). Not to mention cows.

Figure 1.0: Whee!

I was taken aback by Motosuwa’s perverseness (the internet is for porn comes to mind) but it really isn’t that bad in retrospect. Typical 18yo, etc.

Episode 2 had super meido (Yuzuki!). End of Transmission. Oh wait, there was some plot hints too with Kokubunji and persocom love.

Episode 3 had me thinking, when isn’t Japan in a recession? In addition to the hot teacher, Takako-sensei, Yumi appears like a typhoon. Her breasts She is quite enjoyable to watch, teasing Hideki quite a bit; I also began to worry if things would take a harem route. (Wo)Man versus Machine! Ya… no.

The next episode I think I said something along the lines of:

<hikago> if I hear pantsu
<hikago> ONE MORE TIME
/me goes nuts

The episode was godawful. Flipping through the episode reopened old wounds, lets just pretend it never happened. Ah, I almost forgot – the only redeeming thing would be the last 15 seconds where we can hear Tanaka Rie gleefully calling Hideki a “hentai”. pew pew pew.

Episode 5 introduced THE BOOK. Or more precisely, The Book of Plot Exposition and Creepy Creatures. I think it was this episode that really got me into the story as I became genuinely interested in how they would approach the subject of human and humanoid machine interaction.

It was also around this point that I started worrying if any of the ladies Hideki came to know were actually persocoms. As we saw with Yuzuki, having the large plastic port protectors are not a requirement and probably just a highly visible method of differentiating persocoms from humans, like with the “halos” in Eve no Jikan.

Okazu! I think this was the first time I’ve heard it used in a perverse way, I’m not too sure how side dishes -> porn, but then again the Japanese have this odd association with food and things that… get them going (Green Green had this too, but I don’t want to go there).

If I still pretend episode 4 never happened, this was a pretty strong start.

About hikago

Meido is love. Nekomimi is <3.

The recession continued for 12 straight years (longer than the Great Depression), until Mr. Koizumi implemented the required reforms… And two years after that it was recession again, thanks to Abe’s leadership (it began before the mortgage meltdown in the U.S. and the global crisis).

I think one of your ‘and’s got turned into an ‘or’ there somehow.

    I wouldn’t say it’s perverted, but it’s extremely cute.
