Disgusting

They’re everywhere.

They’re in your neighborhood. They go to your restaurants. They’re on your bus. You can’t avoid them. They have four eyes, two mouths, eight tentacles that wrap around themselves, and thrives in a pool of narcissistic self-indulgence. They’re absolutely disgusting.

The movie is Four Eyed Monsters. It’s a semi-autobiographical story of a couple who met online. While the directing, editing, cinematography, and animations are all superb, the film generally lacked focus. Too much of the film relies on expository monologues, and with a running time of 71 minutes, it really feels like a good 20 minutes can be cut down without losing any of its messages.

The true admiration, however, goes to the decisions behind the camera. They financed the entire project through credit card debt, which ended up being to around 100,000 American dollars. That’s just bold!

On June8, 2007, the duo, Arin and Susan, released their film in it’s entirety on Youtube for the world to see for free. It’s hard to say if they did it because they thought it’s great for publicity (and therefore maybe getting their future projects made without debt) or if they truly embody the spirit of the internet generation and for the love of art with video as its medium. Nevertheless, this type of action puts them ahead of their peers, and the film industry in general, and should be commended.

And oh, by the way, if you want to support Arin and Susan, go visit the link and watch at least the introduction.
