The Creepy Blonde Chick

Filed under: Movieslsun @ 2:28 pm

Having not read any of the books, I don’t consider myself a Harry Potter fan. I do enjoy, however, the film adaptation of the saga. They belong to a category of mainstream film spawned by Hollywood, typically with high production value, romanticized heroes, and never pausing for a second to let anyone absorb the subtext. They are easy films to watch, and perhaps my guilty pleasures. When presented with the choice between Order of the Phoenix and Babel, I thought I’ll save Babel for a different day.

The Order of the Phoenix gets right to the point. Wasting no time on introductions, (and with four movies, Harry needs none) the inciting incident occurs literally within thirty seconds of the opening title sequence. (To put it in perspective, the inciting incident in The Godfather occurred after 45 minutes) This movie felt a little different. I wasn’t drawn to the movie by the story, or the spectacular effects, but rather, by this… creepy blonde chick.

Silly Kids, Politics are for Rabbits

The headline of a Globe and Mail article today read “For a single moment, the stars were aligned”, referring to the brief moment the green party lead the polls in Owen Sound last night. It brought a smile to my face. I would have liked to see the Green party pick up at least one riding if the referendum is not going through (Which btw, is all hikago’s fault). Of course, I didn’t help the cause either; I didn’t vote green. And boy am I paying the price now. This morning, on my way to work, I was ambushed by an elite tag-team of Al Gore and David Suzuki. Despite having the fitness of a hippo and the smarts of a chimp, they still managed to chase me down behind an alley. While they had me against the wall, the Govinator showed up with a piece of two-by-four.

Everybody Loves Russell

Filed under: TV — Tags: , lsun @ 9:53 am

That’s right. Russell Peters scored his own television series with FOX, like all good comedians who don’t have the caliber to star in movies. For many, this is great news, as he is rather popular in Canada. I’ve seen his comedy central routine as well as his DVD release, and personally, I find him to be a one-trick pony. Don’t get me wrong, I love his jokes. It just gets tiring when he makes the same ones over and over again.

His material deals mostly with racial stereotypes and culture differences and his show will be about what his life would be like if he did not become famous, and living with traditional Indian parents. That feels like familiar territories, but I think the best part about Russell Peters is his impressions. His imitation is spot-on and his accents are flawless (his Chinese accent is better than what i can do, and I speak Chinese). In a television series, however, unless he pulls an Eddie Murphy, I’m not sure how many opportunities we’ll get to see those impressions.

He’s currently writing the show with his brother, and we’ll see for ourselves when the show finally airs. Hm… sounds awfully familiar to the Sarah Silverman Program. I just hope his show will be something more than just a cute butt.
